Group : Coelogyne
Covers these genera : Coelogyne (Coel.) , Dendrochilum (Dend.) , Pholidota (Phldt.)
General information for this group :
Most members of this group require nearly identical conditions. They are easy to grow and bloom when provided with the right environment.
The genus Coelogyne has a fairly wide distribution throughout southeast Asia. The culture of each species is connected to the altitudes of its distribution. Typically the wider the range of elevation, the more adaptable the species is to the conditions provided. These statements also apply to Dendrochilums and Pholidotas.
These plants typically prefer moderate light to perform well. If your plant does not perform (ie. bloom) up to your expectations, then try increasing the light levels slowly until the leaves are a medium-green. Do not increase light levels too quickly as this could result in scorching of the leaves.
Most species and hybrids prefer intermediate temperatures. A table has been included to help you determine the most ideal temperature range based on elevations.
|sea-level to 1000m||warm||min. night = 16°C (61°F)|
max. day = 26°C (79°F)
|1000m to 2000m||intermediate||min. night = 13°C (55°F)|
max. day = 23°C (73°F)
|2000m to 3000m||cool||min. night = 10°C (50°F)|
max. day = 20°C (68°F)
Shallow/moderate rooters. Use pots that are as wide or wider than height, but no deeper than 5” (12.5 cm). Plastic pots are good. Never, ever overpot !!!
|Pot Sizes||Recommended Medium|
|2.5” and under|
|sphagnum +/- perlite|
|fine bark w good humidity|
add sphagnum if poor humidity
|5” and over|
|layered approach – coarse mix for bottom half, finer on top|
Water and Fertilizer :
Use good quality water, ideally rain-water or dehumidifier water. Avoid well-water, softened water and bottled water. ONLY fertilize during active growth, using a properly balanced orchid fertilizer (ie. 3:1:3 ratio), at 1/4 up to 1/2 strength. Target 5.8 to 6.4 pH, TDS of 200 ppm. During rest periods, only apply a dribble of plain water to prevent excessive shrivelling of the pseudobulbs.
|warm||year-round but less in winter||less in winter|
|intermediate||provide short rest in winter ~ 4 weeks||stop during 4 week bracket of rest period|
|cool||provide longer rest in winter ~ 8 weeks||stop during 4 week bracket of rest period|
|NOTE: a 4 week bracket of the rest period means the cycle starts 4 weeks before the rest period begins, and ends 4 weeks after the rest period has ended.|
These plants have very different peak blooming periods dependant on the species. Often many plants will bloom more than once per year, especially true with the hybrids. If you carefully select your Coelogynes, you can have at least one in bloom all year-round.
